“`It seems Codies ‘might’ just be on a winner with their new arcade racer – Race Driver: GRID™. Yes, it’s an arcade racer, don’t get me started on that one even Codies agree it is, and it might just turn out to be the formula they were looking for.
“`Since they jumped ship on the TOCA Series (V8SC’s and BTCC series), many were apprehensive about what they (Codies) were doing. Many were, and still are really peeved that they have basically forgone the millions of supporters of the previous iterations (TOCA series) and gone “all arcade” on us. Their main reason for doing so was to reach a bigger audience. As the previous games were finding it difficult to maintain a user base large enough to support the heavy fees associated with a heavily licensed games such as racing.
In America the TOCA Race Driver series, known there simply as Race Driver, did not fair well at all due to lack of appeal to the average racing buff States-Side, something Codemasters definitely wanted to turn around. Yet it did do reasonably well in Europe under the TOCA Race Driver and BBFC banner. While in Australia and New Zealand, the game went under the name of V8 Supercars (1-2 & 3) an dhad a huge loyal support base in those regions.
All that though has now been swept aside, and in order to get bums-on-seats, Codemasters have decided to dump the real race style and go for a hybrid that combined a little of V8 Muscle Car, some European class and Japanese Drifting. All of which have their own special following in their respective regions. A combination that could be a good thing, or a bad one if it’s not executed properly. One would hope that they get it right, as it’s not the best to be called a “Jack-of-all-trades”, which they could become if it isn’t pulled off properly
However, news out today from Atari, Codemasters Publisher/Distributor for the game announced that since May 8th, when Race Driver: GRID was released as a Downloadable Demo on both XboxLive Marketplace, the PSN and the Games For Windows network, the game’s demo has topped the 1 Million mark. With the game still a good way off being placed on the shelves at your local game store, effectively that number could well rise substantially more as it gets closer to release day, 12th June 2008
We have an detailed look at the game in a following article along with some vids and more screens, so stay tuned.
